İSTANBUL (İHA) - The Turkish foreign trade deficit widened in May to $4.834 billion from $3.520 billion a year earlier, the Turkish Statistics Institute said Wednesday.

Provisional data from the statistics office showed exports rose 34.5% on the year to $9.885 billion, while imports increased 35.4% to $14.719 billion.

In the January-May period, exports rose 15.6% on the year to $45.546 billion and imports rose 36.6% to $68.125 billion, causing the trade deficit to widen 115.5% to $22.579 billion.

In 2009 as a whole, exports fell 22.6% on the year to $102.2 billion and imports were down 30.3% at $140.8 billion, causing the trade deficit to narrow 44.8% to $38.6 billion.
