- UPDATE: Turkish May Current Account Deficit $2.997 Bln
ISTANBUL (IHA) - Turkey's current account was in deficit to the tune of $2.997 billion in May, widening from a deficit of $1.624 billion the equivalent month a year earlier, the country's central bank said Monday.
In the first five months of 2010, the current account deficit widened to $17.433 billion from a deficit of $5.181 billion in the comparable period of 2009.
In 2009, the full-year current-account deficit was $13.854 billion, narrowing from a deficit of $41.947 billion the previous year, the bank said.
Foreign trade registered a deficit of $3.531 billion in May, compared with a deficit of $2.441 billion in the comparable month of 2009, the bank said.
During the first five months of the year, the foreign trade deficit was $16.139 billion, widening from a deficit of $5.172 billion in January to May of 2009.
In 2009 as a whole, the foreign trade deficit was $24.729 billion, less than half the figure of a year earlier.
